Four wires to your VESC
Power and ground, plus one data line in each direction. That is the whole installation.
Line colors in this drawing are for illustration only. Always go by the labels printed on your controller.
What goes where
| Tosh Dash | VESC | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 5V | 5V | Powers the display from the VESC's 5-volt rail. |
| GND | GND | Common ground. Without it, data will not work either. |
| TX | RX | Display asks the VESC for data. |
| RX | TX | VESC sends the data back. |
Wired correctly — and still no data?
Then it is almost certainly VESC Tool, not the cable. The UART port only talks when it is switched on and both sides use the same speed:
| Where | Setting | Value |
|---|---|---|
| App Settings → General | App to Use | UART — or ADC and UART / PPM and UART if you use a throttle on ADC or PPM |
| App Settings → UART | Baudrate | 115200 |
Write the app configuration to the VESC afterwards. This caught us during our own builds: perfect wiring, red dot — the baud rate was not set.
Finding the UART port on your VESC
Most VESC-based controllers have a port labeled UART or COMM. The pin
order differs from model to model, so always go by the printed labels or your controller's
manual — not by position or by wire color of a third-party cable.
With or without the cable
The optional Tosh Dash VESC Cable is two metres of four-wire flat ribbon cable — long enough to run from the controller to your handlebar. If you already have suitable four-core wire, you do not need it.
How the cable meets your controller depends on the model. Spintend controllers ship with an adapter for their UART port; on other models, check what came with yours and go by the printed labels.
Using Bluetooth at the same time
Tosh Dash uses the UART port. If your Bluetooth module plugs into the separate NRF header, both work side by side. If your Bluetooth module also needs the UART port, only one of the two can be connected at a time.
